In the 2019-20 State Budget, the Victorian Government announced $321.9 million in funding over four years for the School Dental Program.

Smile Squad provides free dental care to all Victorian public primary and secondary school students.

The service delivery component of this program will be managed by Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV), who are the lead oral health agency in Victoria. The initiative will be delivered via up to 250 dental vans, staffed by up to 500 dental health professionals.

Delivery stages

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) are working together to bring Smile Squad to every government primary and secondary school by 2022.

The Smile Squad pilot started in Term 3 of 2019 where dental examination and treatment services were tested in a number of schools.

Now, the Victoria wide roll-out is starting in Term 1, 2020. The local government areas getting visits from the Smile Squad vans from Term 1 are Towong, Latrobe, Brimbank, Hepburn, Buloke, Mansfield and Greater Bendigo.

Later in 2020, schools in Campaspe, East Gippsland, Macedon Ranges, Maribyrnong, Melton and Wangaratta will get visits from Smile Squad, as well as select schools in Casey and Hume local government areas.
